No GenCon Exclusive for '09
Posted Today at 01:10 PM by truth

Wizards of the Coast has informed heroscapers.com that due to budget concerns they will not offer an exclusive Heroscape figure at this year's GenCon.

The yearly Heroscape exclusive figure has always been a highlight for those attending GenCon and we are disappointed to see it go. We felt it was important to release this news as soon as possible to avoid the much greater disappointment of expecting a Heroscape exclusive and then showing up to GenCon to find that there isn't going to be one.

Actually, I think they are cutting back in general, as demonstrated by Rychean's Gencon map thread. They want smaller maps, because they have less space available to them.

Personally, I would rather see exclusives be something you mail in UPC's for or something, rather than something for non-players to get rich on ePay with.

I agree with this idea. Then my dad won't think I was crazy for insisting on saving all those!!!

I don't care who gets "rich"... It's their mini, they have the freedom to do with it what they may, no matter how it was attained. I was just pointing out that I don''t think WoTC is taking HS very seriously and that our game is "in trouble".

Maybe they've just been putting extra effort into making Wave 9 decent?

...Maybe, and I'd really like to think that because it would make me feel good. But that isn't what my gut is telling me... My gut is telling me that they are going to put extra effort into those products that make them the maximum amount of profit (they are a business after all). I don't thaink they view Heroscape as one of those products.

I think they are just screwing with us, and I think they need to consider people like me. I for one will never by a Wizards of the Coast product again if they don't treat Heroscape right...... except maybe D&D, and wave 9 and other waves if they come out, and anything else they might put out that seems really cool

I thought you meant that the lack of an exclusive meant that Heroscape was in trouble. I don't think so. I think they are making good decisions in bad economic times. Why give something away when you need to make money. I would think that Heroscapers would go to Gencon for the games, not the exclusives, and it's the Heroscapers that are buying WotC's stuff.

For example, let's say that WotC gave away 2000 exclusives last year. I bet less than half of them went to actual Heroscapers. That means that half of the money WotC spent on exclusives was effectively wasted on people flipping them. Make sense?

Given the general lack of availability of anything Heroscape, I think WotC knows exactly what this franchise means to them.

I sure hope so... I hope they realize the profit that could be made from a game that they can sell to the mainstream in Wal-Mart. We'll see...
