Details are thus:

Where: Gatekeeper, Topeka. {Map}
When: Sunday, Feb. 24th, 12:00 - 6:00
Fee: One HS booster (commons preferred) or equivalent

Contact Zach if you have trouble acquiring booster packs.

500 point army (No Marvel or Custom figures)
Swiss-style tournament rules
16 player maximum - Registration is closed
4 50 minute rounds
First round starts at 12:30 (if everything goes smoothly)

Confirmed:
Dan
Emilio
Ben
Greg
Dave C.
Zach
Annika
Red Matt
Bill
Kyle
KC
Drew
Spence
Dustin
Brady

ej will only play if there is an odd number of players.

Maybes:
TOG
Dylan

The store assures me that 20 is doable, but that would have to be the absolute cut-off point. I think if I ever do a second tournament I will consider getting a hotel conference room or a church basement.

Maps:
Marr Highway
Molten Ground
Spineback Ridge
Embattled Fen
Arctic Divide

Losing Points:
AE will count towards the 24 hex limit. If they don't drop they don't count towards the loser's points. If the Rechets are not summoned because Iskara is destroyed, then the Rechets will count towards the loser's points.

Discussion Points: (I'll update this with questions and answers as the need arises)

1) In the first Lee's Summit tournament we had 3 rounds of play before a 4-player semi-final and a 2-player final. If we have the maximum 16 participants I'd like to consider having 4 rounds of play for everyone and skipping the 4-player round. If we don't have 16 players then keeping the 4-player round is probably best. Any thoughts?

Sounds reasonable - that would put the tourney at 5 hours or so.

ej wrote:
2) I'd like to include one or two SotM maps. The only problem I think this presents is does this give any kind of unfair consideration to anyone who uses the Marro Drudge in their army? (I haven't played them myself, so I don't know if they're even worth including in a tournament army).

I don't think it would give them an unfair advantage - no more so than Vipers/Microcorp have on water, or Brunak on a Lava map. The presence of swamp terrain I suppose should be one more consideration in building one's army.

ej wrote:
3) I'm going to keep this off of the 'scapers main site until everyone in Lee's Summit and Topeka have the opportunity to sign up. I think I'll post it on the main site around the last week of January if we're not full by then.

Probably a reasonable idea if space is an issue.

I don't have any suggestions for issue #4, but can't wait to see what you come up with!

Since everyone has the opportunity to take the Drudge in their army, I don't think that could be considered an unfair advantage.

Right, and also remember they are gonna have to play those drudge on non-swamp maps as well....

Anyone feel that I should go ahead and declare the Topeka tournament a full 5-round all-play, or should we see how we all like the January tournament without a final match before I make that decision?

Yeah, I'd wait... Although faster and more simple...it might be really anticlimactic. :?

Me, you, Emillio, and Kharma should car pool. It's only about an hour and a half, but still, we'll save a little on gas...

ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

The date is actually Sunday, February 24th!!!

I double-checked with the store today and they had the event written down as the Sunday for that weekend. They have tournaments every Saturday for Magic and Heroclix and WH40K, so we just didn't communicate properly.

Hopefully this is still far enough out that it won't cause anyone to have to drop.

I'll have to ask off for sunday instead of saturday... but I should still have time to make the change.

I'm sorry about that. Hopefully it won't be a problem. And hopefully this is the only complication I run into.

I agree with you on both points regarding question 2

2) Since the SotM thing seems moot, I'll change this question. AE/Rechets situation... should they apply to losing points if they don't deploy, and should they count towards the 24 hex limit? To my way of thinking, if they don't come out, then your opponent was effectively denied their use, so they count. As for the 24-hex limit, I'm thinking they should count there as well. I'd really like input on this, and maybe after Saturday's tournament we'll all have opinions on it.

This thread addresses the AE/Rechets no-show question. Look under "Losing score notes". Hope this helps!

I don't think you should get losing points for the AE if they didn't drop. My problem is, if you're getting losing points - you of course lost. If your opponents AE didn't drop - they still beat you despite a 110 point deficit!

Yeah, but that seems backwards to me. I'd have to spend some time on why I think that, but it just seems wrong on the face of it.

To me the AE are a gamble... you are betting that the d20 will roll good. If your gamble pays off... then they drop, if it doesnt, you get loosing points. Thats just how I see it.

That kind of explains my position, too.

Also, I see it as cheating your opponent out of an opportunity to gain more losing points (if the tourney uses the no-points-for-no-drop rule).

Player A: doesn't manage to destroy anything, but his opponent's AE don't drop - so he gets 110 losing points.
Player B: Manages to off all three Krav before going down - so he gets 100 losing points.
Player A gets the better record, but who really outperformed who?

Player A: suffers a total defeat, and receives no losing points
Player B: suffers a total defeat despite his opponent's AE never coming into play - and receives 110 losing points.
Player B gets the better record, yet his 500 point army essentially lost to a 390 point army.

I just don't see why the losing player should get free credit for a kill when his opponent's AE don't drop.

So.... Maps. Any suggestions? I'd like to use a totally different set of maps than what we used at the Hextreme tourney. Thoughts?

My first suggestion is by Rychean and is in consideration for the BoV

Road Rampage
http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=1141

Never played on it but it looks interesting and most of his maps are fun.

I agree - new maps.

My biggest concern right now is the 16-player cap. I kept talking about the tourney to everybody there and am now worried we won't have room. I'm going to talk to the store next time I'm there and try to get a feel from them about how many we can realistically host.

New maps definitely sound good!

Road Rampage does look like fun.

How 'bout a lava map? Hot Heights by Jormi Boced looks interesting.
